“People travel to faraway places to watch, in fascination, the kind of people they ignore at home.” – Dagobert D. Runes

When I first read this quote, it struck me hard. Wake up calls can feel like that, I suppose. They may be subtle or they may be more along the lines of a punch to the gut. A punch to the gut was what I experienced when I first took the time to scroll through National Geographic’s image/video journey: See the Arctic Refuge’s Fragile Beauty

Perhaps had I traveled to our 49th state, at some point in my life, I would have submerged myself into learning about the refuge and the issues at hand. Hence, taking action and engaging on a national level to promote preservation of this great land, before today.

But there is that wise old Chinese proverb: “The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is now.” Let’s utilize all of the ways we can connect with the world today – to travel, even albeit virtually – and reduce our ignorance. The time for action is now.
