Food Day 2013 is Wednesday, October 23rd, 10-2 pm on the UA Mall.
The University of Arizona Food Day Committee is made up of representatives from across our campus who are passionate about food. We care about health and the environment and are excited to begin planning activities and events that inspire our campus to eat real.
Food Day’s national priorities address problems within the food system and provide common ground for building the food movement. Food Day is all about:
- Promoting safe, healthy foods: The foods we eat should promote, not undermine, our good health.
- Supporting sustainable and organic farms: Sustainable farms are those that meet the needs of today, from health and environmental perspectives, without compromising our future.
- Improving access to safe, healthy foods: Around 50 million Americans are considered “food insecure”, or near hunger, and food deserts are common.
- Reforming factory farms to protect our good health, the environment and farm animals: Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) that produce meat and meat products result in soil erosion, water and air pollution, the formation of antibiotic resistant “superbugs”, and many other negative health and environmental issues.
- Supporting fair working conditions for food and farm workers: Many farmworkers earn well below poverty levels, work when ill, have little to no access to health care, and are exposed to poisonous chemicals on a daily basis.
