On July 9th, Mrs. Green joined fifty-four children and other dignitaries for the Kids’ “State Dinner” at the White House, an annual event hosted by First Lady Michelle Obama. Each child submitted a healthy recipe as part of the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge and a selection of the winning healthy recipes were served at the event. A surprise visit by President Obama was a highlight of the event.
Mrs. Green was invited by the First Lady to report on 12-year-old Haile Thomas, a nationally recognized healthy eating advocate from Tucson, Ariz. Haile, who also was a guest of Michelle Obama at the President’s State of the Union address in January, was chosen to introduce the First Lady at the event.
The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge invited families to create an original lunchtime recipe that is healthy, affordable and delicious, and follows the nutritional guidelines of MyPlate. The winners were chosen by a panel of judges from the organizations that teamed up with Mrs. Obama on this initiative; Epicurious, the Department of Education and the Department of Agriculture.
Haile Thomas was a recent guest on Mrs. Green’s World weekly radio show. Listen to the podcast now!
