Be the ChangeYou Wish to See: Power of Volunteering, Wendy Erica Werden is an award-winning community engagement manager with more than 25 years of outreach, marketing, media and strategic development experience. She began her career in with the Fox TV affiliate in Cleveland, Ohio – then moved to Tucson, Arizona where she has worked with associations and businesses, an environmental non-profit, and media entities including PBS and NPR affiliates through the University of Arizona. She joined Arizona Congressman Ron Barber’s office as Outreach and Deputy District Director in 2012, and re-joined the Tucson Electric Power/UniSource Energy team in early 2015 as the Manager of Community Investment where she manages donations totaling more than $2 million annually. In her personal time she enjoys volunteering with animal rescue and the outdoors as a trail builder and section steward of the Arizona National Scenic Trail. She is proud of her work and commitment to improving Arizona, but also loves being on her horse with her trail dog on a mountain far away from the reach of her mobile phone.

Shea-Lynn has worked a wide variety of positions from childcare to office assistant, and even collections supervisor at a local law firm. Shea-Lynn is currently the Volunteer Programs Coordinator at Tucson Electric Power (TEP). She is responsible for helping nonprofit organizations connect with TEP’s enthusiastic employee volunteers.

He has been with TEP for 8 years. Prior to joining the utility industry, Steven has held positions in land use planning, real estate development and economic development. He is an active member of the Tucson community, serving on various community boards and philanthropic organizations. Steven and his wife, Missy, are both native Tucsonans and University of Arizona graduates and spend most free time raising their three young and energetic children. When not engaged with family activities, Steven is an avid runner, cyclist and outdoor enthusiast.

Environmental Protection Partner Award: The University of Arizona’s (UA) School of Natural Resources and the Environment was honored for its long-standing collaboration with TEP to protect large birds from electrical lines and equipment through the Raptor Protection Program. The TEP-UA partnership to protect birds of prey and preserve the delicate desert ecosystem has spanned more than 20 years. UA wildlife biologists and researchers identify areas of raptor activity and nesting and, based on their recommendations, TEP installs protective equipment to reduce and prevent the number of hawks and owls injured or killed by energized lines.

Business Development Partner Award: Local First Arizona earned this award for its Scale Up program, a six-week workshop developed to help small businesses save water, energy and money through a variety of conservation measures. Collectively, participants in this program are estimated to save nearly $700,000 in electric costs, $55,000 in water costs and $29,000 in gas costs. Some of these savings were gained from retrofitting their lighting with LEDs bulbs with assistance from TEP’s energy experts and contractors.

Progressive Partner Award: Mayor Jonathan Rothschild was recognized for bringing to Tucson a public bike share system that provides residents and visitors with a fun, healthy and eco-friendly way to navigate the city. Launched in 2017, Tugo Bike Share is a collaborative partnership among Tugo Bike Share, the City of Tucson and Mayor’s Office, the Tucson Department of Transportation and many businesses, including TEP as a major sponsor. In Tugo’s first year of operation, more than 30,000 trips were taken on these bikes. By replacing driving with bicycling, it is estimated that Tugo users helped reduced CO2 emissions in Tucson by more than 14,000 pounds.

Conservation Partner Award: Civano Nursery of Tucson was recognized for its green waste recycling program, which gives new life to tree trimmings. For the past 15 years, Civano nursery has used tree trimmings cleared away from power line right-of-ways to produce nutrient-rich mulch that the nursery then uses to grow shrubs and trees at its Sahuarita location. These tree trimmings might otherwise end up at the Los Reales Landfill. By recycling this green waste, carbon dioxide emissions from having to transport the trimmings to the landfill are reduced annually by approximately 22,000 pounds, and more than $100,000 is saved from landfill costs.

Accelerating Towards Renewable Sources of Energy: Wind Erik joined Tucson Electric Power as a Corporate Counsel in 2000 after earning a bachelor’s degree in political science from Arizona State University and a juris doctorate from the University of Arizona. He advanced through management positions in Land Resources and Environmental Services and was promoted to Senior Director of Transmission & Environmental Services in 2014. He was promoted to his current position in 2018.

In his current role, Erik oversees grid operations and environmental compliance and policy for the Company. He has lived in Tucson since 1979 and has served his community by participating in many volunteer activities and serving on various philanthropic Boards. Erik currently serves on Board of Trustees for the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (immediate past Chair), on the Board of The Nature Conservancy and on the Advisory Board of the Friends of Saguaro National Park. He enjoys hiking, fly-fishing, mountain biking and horseback riding in Tucson and throughout the West.

Employing Our Veterans: An Arizona Roadmap, Part 2

Doyace Wilson is an Engineering Project Manager at Tucson Electric Power (TEP). Doyace joined TEP after serving 21 years in the United States Air Force where he led multidisciplinary teams in high-paced, no-room-for-error environments. During this time, he successfully managed projects, including aircraft system upgrades, facilities construction, flight safety and logistics programs. In his current role, he is responsible for managing the engineering, procurement, and construction of substation, communication, renewable interconnection and transmission line projects. Doyace participated in Department of Defense Career Skills Program through Davis Monthan Air Force Base, and worked as a Military Intern at TEP. The program allows transitioning military members to spend their final months on active duty interning at a civilian company. The goal of the program is to help service members successfully transition from military to civilian employment. Doyace has a Bachelor of Arts in Management and Organizational Development from Spring Arbor University and a Masters of Business Administration from Liberty University.

Sarah A. Wise is an Associate Substation Engineer at Tucson Electric Power (TEP) in the Transmission and Distribution Department. She has been with TEP for 6 months completing the Military Career Skills program for transitioning military members. During her time, she has created commissioning/testing procedures for substation equipment and collaborated with Substation Engineers to design and finalize electrical interconnection drawings for rebuild projects. She is currently working towards a Bachelor of Science, Engineering in Electrical Engineering (Electrical Power and Energy Systems) at Arizona State University (Online).

Ms. Wise has served honorably for 6 years as an Aerospace Ground Equipment technician in the United States Air Force at Davis-Monthan AFB, Az. While serving Sarah completed Air Force Leadership School as a distinguished graduate and honed those skills to become a section supervisor. Under her leadership equipment, operational levels remained at 94% or higher and preventative maintenance inspections were 3 weeks ahead of schedule.

Tammy McKay is a Program Manager for UNS Energy Corporation (“UNS Energy”), parent company of Tucson Electric Power (“TEP”) and Unisource Energy Services (“UES). Ms. McKay has been with UNS Energy for 20 years. She has advanced through various positions, and in September 2014 joined the Demand Side Management team. Currently Ms. McKay manages multiple residential energy efficiency programs for both TEP and UES. Her portfolio includes programs such as Existing Homes HVAC, Multi-Family HVAC, Multi-Family Direct Install, Smart Thermostats, Academic Education, Community Education, and in 2019 recently launched Heat Pump Water Heaters & Electric Vehicle Chargers.

Candice Rupprecht is the Water Conservation Manager at Tucson Water, southern Arizona’s largest public water utility. Her team has primary responsibility for water conservation planning, conservation research, customer water audits and the suite of education and efficiency programs offered to customers. Prior to working at Tucson Water, Candice worked at the University of Arizona Water Resources Research Center for seven years, where she focused on water education, outreach and conservation research. She holds a B.S. in Geosciences and a M.S. in Hydrology, both from the University of Arizona.

A Vision for a Greener Tomorrow: Leadership Toward Renewable Energies, David G. Hutchens is President and Chief Executive Officer of UNS Energy Corporation (“UNS Energy”), parent company of Tucson Electric Power (“TEP”) and Unisource Energy Services (“UES”). He also serves as Executive Vice President of Fortis Inc., overseeing Western Utility Operations including UNS, FortisBC and FortisAlberta.

Mr. Hutchens has been with UNS Energy for 20 years. He advanced through various management positions overseeing wholesale energy trading and marketing and, in January 2007, was named Vice President of Wholesale Energy and UNS Gas, an operating subsidiary of UES. He became Vice President of Energy Efficiency and Resource Planning in May 2009, rose to Executive Vice President in March 2011 and was named President in December 2011 before assuming his current role in May 2014.

He earned a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Arizona and is a former nuclear submarine officer in the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Hutchens joined the Board of Directors of UNS Energy in December 2013, the FortisBC Board of Directors in January 2015, and the FortisAlberta Board of Directors in July 2016, as well as Edison Electric Institute. He is past Chair Western Energy Institute’s Board of Directors and is current Chair of Sun Corridor, Inc. He also is a member of the Southern Arizona Leadership Council, the Tucson Conquistadores, Salpointe Catholic Education Board of Directors.

He is a native of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In 2017, they completed two projects that resulted in more the 1.5 MILLION kWh in energy savings. We will get some in-depth information on how they updated exterior induction lighting on streets, parking lots and building exteriors, and installed energy management systems for heating and cooling units. Dan Hogan, Tucson Electric Power, Manager of Products and Services Since 1982, TEP has been helping low-income residents reduce their energy expenses through the installation of improved insulation, upgraded cooler motors and other such “weatherization” improvements to their homes. Larry Weigel, Transmission and Distribution Supervision, Tucson Electric Power Company Have you ever heard of another utility company in the United States with an entire program dedicated to safeguarding raptors and other wildlife? Please let me know if you have. In any case, welcome to one that I know about and absolutely love: Tucson Electric Power’s Raptor Protection Program. This nature and wildlife friendly program is an ongoing effort to safeguard electrical equipment to protect birds such as Harris’ Hawks, Great Horned Owls and Red-Tailed Hawks in Pima County, Arizona. It can even be called a prevention program because for more than 15 years, TEP has worked with wildlife biologists at the University of Arizona to identify and evaluate parts of the electrical system that need protection and to design innovative solutions to mitigate the danger electrical wires pose for large birds. Why do raptors, or birds of prey, favor utility poles for perching, hunting and socializing when their large wingspans make them more susceptible to electrical hazards? When is their nesting season and why does that matter so much? And what can you do to help when you discover a raptor or a BABY raptor in need of help in your neighborhood? For over 25 years, the Tucson Electric Power Raptor Program has installed raptor protection on every new pole installed in the service territory; and they have a nest protection component – TEP does nest surveys annually to find active nests and protect poles within a 300-meter radius within active nests.
Birds can get themselves into trouble with electric poles by electrocuting themselves or colliding with the poles and injuring themselves.

Create shade. Conserve Energy. To that end, TEP has re-launched its urban forestry shade trees program. The new Trees for You program is designed to help us reduce our energy consumption by planting shade trees. Mrs. Green loves that! TEP is now partnering with Civano Nursery and other local nurseries to help homeowners, schools, neighborhoods and community groups plant shade trees to save energy and cool and beautify our community. Join us to learn from Nikole and Leslie just how to go about participating in this program and why tree conservation matters so much in this desert of ours. What is a Smart/Connected Home? New smart devices are making homes more energy efficient and easier to control. From managing your lights and thermostat, to managing your garage, these devices give us a glimpse into the future of energy use in homes across the country.
One smart device is The Nest thermostat, which allows you to control the temperature of your house straight from your phone! It also studies the temperature of your home throughout time so it can "learn" things like how long it takes the house to cool to the specified temperature, how long it takes the house to warm, etc.
Water, gas and electric utilities, including Tucson Electric Power (TEP), have been deploying Smart Meters for over a decade to make our distribution systems more intelligent, responsive and efficient.

Tucson Electric Power's (TEP) Efficient Home Program is a partnership with builders to build construction that is focused on quality building, creating sustainable environments that customers are looking for - improve the safety, comfort and energy efficiency of your house. An energy-efficient home is a healthful home!
An Energy Star Home is an above code home. It lets the customer know the quality of their home, everything they can and cannot see. To earn the Energy Star, a home must meet strict guidelines for energy efficiency set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), making them more efficient than standard homes.
When we talk about air quality, sealing the home is only the first step. You want to bring in fresh air in and out each hour just as much as you want to seal the home so you don’t have energy loss. Indoor air quality is a big focus for the future of new homes.
Version 3 of Energy Star takes water into consideration as well. It shows there's a plan to deal with water that comes to the home because of storms, humidity etc and to move it away from the home and use it in other ways.
Smart learning thermostats are the future of homes. It is really important to know how they work so that they can really manage your energy use.
Tip: Examine your home’s air filter every month and change it if needed!
