As true leaders in health care technology, Tucson Medical Center (TMC) is the FIRST Southern Arizona hospital to deliver virtual care. They have introduced a virtual app that makes it easier than ever before to connect to exceptional care with compassion. The TMCNow app lets patients visit a board-certified physician through a phone, laptop or computer, virtually any time of day from anywhere. So, imagine being able to speak to a physician, face-to-face, using the built-in computer on your smartphone or tablet. The doctor can provide medical advice, recommend treatment and even prescribe medication. This is another great example of TMC providing care whenever and wherever patients need it. They are meeting patients where they are helping us all to get quality treatment faster and without having to visit an emergency room.
The dynamic duo of Amy Fregonese and Jordan Richardson, Child Life Specialists, Tucson Medical Center

If you have ever had a child who had to be hospitalized, you know the fear that grips all of you as you walk through those doors. Join us to hear about the passion, dedication, commitment and in-depth knowledge that these two women and their colleagues at TMC bring to the table. They do everything in their power to put everyone at ease starting with the children. Amy and Jordan will share what services they provide, how their team puts energy and focus into the community to help create positive attitudes around healthcare, and how the community helps by giving back. It’s a show you will not want to miss and another example of how TMC’s commitment to healthy and sustainable communities is far reaching and impactful. This show made possible due to the generous support of Tucson Medical Center.

INSIGHTS

A Child Life Specialist (CLS) is a key support person for patients and families during a child’s time in the hospital.
Creating a healthy, safe environment, within the hospital, is key to managing the stress of that situation and impact rates of recovery.
One of the conditions that Jordan and Amy are seeing in great amounts is asthma. Mrs. Green shares insights, as to the role of environment and the rise of asthma rates, during this podcast.
How does one become a CLS? The training is quite in depth and rigorous – learn more about this profession during this podcast.
Why is Mrs. Green’s World talking about CLS? Our human experience plays out, every moment, in how we care for our planet. Supportive programs and services for families, that are inclusive and promote kindness, human connection and health, only enhance our experiences and create space for giving back to the global community and promote care for the planet.

SHOW NOTES

INSIGHTS

It's important we care about the health of our heart!

For women the statistics are quite shocking, 1 in 31 women will die from breast cancer and 1 in 3 women will die from heart disease

In Pima County, heart disease is the second highest cause of death - nationally it is the leading cause of death

Heart disease is almost 90% preventable, however our lifestyles of poor diets, lack of exercise and other factors continue to influence the rate of the disease

Coronary plaque can start developing as young as age 11 so reducing your risks is especially important

Many of the symptoms of a heart attack are very much different in women than they are in men, instead of feeling pain radiating throughout the arms, the pain may be radiating throughout their back, which can be disregarded for other issues

30 minutes of exercise everyday is critical for optimum health and having a healthy diet that is low in fat and sodium is a holistic approach

Reducing your risk factors such as changing your diet, watching your blood pressure, watching your weight and making sure you're getting the proper nutrition can reduce your risk of heart disease and other chronic illnesses

Patients at the TMC cardiac rehab have created a community, exercising together, sharing ideas, recipes and so much more - TMC is helping bring this to the Tucson community beyond just the rehab center

This show made possible due to the generous support of Tucson Medical Center.

SHOW NOTES:

Trained Health Coaches are advisors who help people create health goals, and support people to achieve success in making sustainable healthy lifestyle choices. Certified Health Coaches are often trained Registered Dietitians, Fitness Instructors, Nurses, or other health providers that are passionate about health and wellness.

Holistic Health Coaches (like Molly) look at the whole picture and support individuals to achieve his or her wellness goals by helping people attain their personal mind-body-spirit balance. Molly practices a holistic approach to health and wellness - this means that she looks at how all areas of your life are connected. Molly explores all the possible variables that impact your health. Does stress at your job or in your relationship(s) cause you to overeat or eat mostly processed fried food? Does lack of sleep or low energy prevent you from exercising? What we eat, and how often we move is certainly important to our health, but not the whole picture. Molly works together with the client and tries to understand the “why” and “what” that impacts the whole picture.

The “Health Coaching” Molly does is very much Lifestyle Medicine coaching. Not to be confused with Life Coaching. The central word is Lifestyle. Molly is very passionate about prevention and the power of Lifestyle choices! Many illnesses and hospitalizations can be prevented through managing our personal risks for the major diseases like heart disease, stroke, and cancer.

Stroke, Heart attack and Cardiovascular disease may be prevented 80% of the time through healthy lifestyle choices. Isn’t that exciting! 80% preventable!! Lifestyle is the key for prevention – you want to lower your risks!

Health and wellness is really an ongoing journey that relies on making consistent healthy lifestyle choices.

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

Numbers that Molly encourages people to know and manage through healthy lifestyle include:

Keep a healthy weight and try to maintain your BMI less than 25 kg/m2.

Manage total cholesterol less than 200 mg/dL and LDL less than 100 mg/dL.

Aim to keep HDL, the healthy cholesterol high and greater than 40 mg/dL.

Control sugar and keep fasting glucose less than 100 mg/dL.

Aim to attain the normal hemoglobin A1c test between 4%-5.6%.

Manage Blood pressure less than 120/80 mm Hg.

It should come as no surprise to members of the Tucson community that some of TMC’s best work takes place outside the walls of the hospital. It’s a given that as a nonprofit community hospital, their first priority is to provide the very best care to their patients (regardless of their ability to pay) as its part of their mission to serve the most vulnerable in our community. But they also take GREAT pride in the work they do outside the walls including countless screenings, health fairs, educational sessions, bike-helmet fittings and nutrition education. I am hopeful that Julia and Mike will include in their report TMC’s exciting news about the Rincon Health Campus – serving this community on the southeast side of Tucson. They hold themselves accountable and, from where I sit, to a very high standard. Join us to get informed about this very important presence in our community.

And create one that provides a healthy, nurturing environment for patients, their families and for the caregivers who work there? Evidence shows that environment plays an important role in promoting healing and creating a sustainable workplace. Nowhere is this more evident than at Tucson Medical Center, with a history rooted strongly in its sense of place in the Sonoran Desert. From expansive courtyards, a 1.75 mile walking path, a community garden for staff and a healing arts program that includes music, sculpture and art, TMC’s healing environment compliments and enhances the compassionate care that is provided to all who visit and work there. I cannot wait to share their story. This show made possible by the generous support of Tucson Medical Center.
