Buffalo Exchange

Buffalo Exchange logoHow does the company exemplify the concept of “reducing”?

Since opening our first store in Tucson in 1974, Buffalo Exchange has believed in reducing our environmental impact. Because we “buy locally” for our inventories, we reduce emissions from production and distribution and we keep textiles out of landfills. We have a long-standing “Tokens For Bags” program where we donate a nickel to charity whenever a customer chooses not to take a bag with their purchase-saving nearly nine million bags since we started the program in 1994! Our Tucson offices monitor water and energy use, use CFL lighting, have setback thermostats and we promote waste and energy reduction throughout the company.

How does the company exemplify the concept of “reusing”?

Because our business is based on resale, the concept of reuse is our primary focus! In addition to our inventory, we reuse printouts for scrap paper, have permanent ware in our break rooms and have bulk bottled water for our employees. We reuse file folders, binders and other office supplies whenever possible. We also provide reusable tote bags for our customers at all of our retail locations.

What is this company’s recycling policy and practice?

We believe in recycling and reducing waste at all our stores and offices. This includes having clearly marked recycling bins for employees, reusing paper and other supplies whenever possible, and participating in local municipal recycling programs. Our company letterhead has 100% recycled content. We donate or resell reusable items, such as electronic equipment and furniture, and return toner cartridges and used CFLs to vendors for reuse and recycling. All of our employees are encouraged to recycle wherever possible and to contribute any new ideas on how to improve the company’s recycling efforts. And, of course, we recycle clothing through sales and donations!

How is this company engaging and informing consumers and employees about the 3 “Rs” and other sustainable practices?

We inform and encourage our employees and customers on sustainable practices through our company policies and through our actions. All of our stores participate in Earth Day activites, we promote the Coats For Cubs program to reuse old furs, and we are phasing out single-use bags company wide. We are also participating in the Tucson Green Business Certification program to help promote our belief in sustainable practices.
