How does the company you are nominating exemplify the concepts of reducing, reusing and recycling? (500 character max.)

Sun City Oro Valley Community Association, Inc. uses reclaimed water to irrigate The views Golf course. Within the last 2 years, SCOV replaced the lanscaping in most of the common areas (300 acres) with AZ native plants which reduced the amount of water needed. Recently all incandescent lights were replaced with LED or fluorescent bulbs reducing the amount of electricity required. SCOV just installed an extensive solar project, which will provide 60% of the electricity required for our common area buildings, reducing our carbon footprint

How does the company engage and inform employees and consumers about sustainability? (500 character max.)

SCOV communicates to all stake holders daily via our website suncityorovalley.com, weekly via “This Week in SCOV” newsletter and monthly via the Tipster publication. All stake holders are invited to monthly “Coffee with the General Manager and a Board Member”, Board Study Sessions and Board Meetings. All employees are involved in regular staff meetings and interaction with members and residents. suggestions for reuse, reduction and recycling are always welcome.

How does the company you are nominating give back to the community? (500 character max.)

  • Residents are tutors for students at Painted Sky Elementary School.
  • We fund raise and support Youth On Their Own.
  • Vistoso Helpful Hands supports residents in need in our community.
  • SCOV Women’s Auxiliary fund raises and supports Emerge for battered women & men.
  • Seniors for Kids focuses on building relationships with children in the area.
  • Residents fund the Sun City Vistoso Community Foundation which supports health, cultural, educational & charitable needs in SCOV & Southern Arizona.

Sun City Oro Valley (SCOV) is an active adult homeowners’ association with 2488 members, about 4000 residents and 100 employees. Seven elected residents serve as the Board of directors which approves budgets and assures the financial integrity. A general manager and a professional staff are responsible for daily operations and maintenance. SCOV has built a strong volunteer committee structure to assist the Board of Directors and management in the operation of the various aspects of the community. Our “company” is a very strong community!
