Night of New Orleans
Sunday, May 30 at 3:00 pm (PT)
New Orleans is coming to Tucson.
On Saturday, Hotel Congress will host its Night for New Orleans.
The charity event will feature 300 pounds of crawfish and other Southern specialties like jambalaya and boiled shrimp for purchase.
Local blues artists The Original Wildcat Jass Band, Tom Walbank and Tony and the Torpedoes will provide the New Awlins-style soundtrack.
The fun starts at 3 p.m., and there is a $5 suggested donation.
Hotel Congress entertainment director David Slutes says the seafood for sale at the event is from the Gulf of Mexico but was not harmed by the oil spill.
In a nod to the crisis along the Gulf Coast, the hotel has invited radio host “Mrs. Green” to come talk about the spill and what people can do to help via the Nature Conservancy.
A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit Tucson-based Opening Minds Through the Arts, which uses instrumental music, opera, dance, theater and visual arts to help teach reading, writing, math and science to children in kindergarten through eighth grade.
