Tucson, AZ (February 23, 2010) — The University of Arizona’s School of Earth and Environmental Sciences is sponsoring the special presentation of SIZZLE: A GLOBAL WARMING COMEDY at The Loft Cinema on Wednesday, March 31 at 7:00 PM.

Writer-director Randy Olson and UA faculty members will do a Q&A with the audience following the screening.

SIZZLE is a unique hybrid of three genres — mockumentary, documentary and reality — that Variety called, “an exceedingly clever vehicle for making science engaging to a general audience.” It is the only U.S. movie that presents both sides of the global warming issue and is more timely than ever given the rocky waters the global warming movement has recently hit. Dr. Olson, a marine-biologist (Harvard)-turned-filmmaker (USC), also wrote and directed the acclaimed documentary, FLOCK OF DODOS: THE EVOLUTION-INTELLIGENT DESIGN CIRCUS and authored the new book, “Don’t Be Such a Scientist: Talking Substance in an Age of Style.” The journal Nature says the book offers, “An excellent explanation of why scientists often have problems communicating with the public.”

The screening of SIZZLE is a highlight of the UA School of Earth and Environmental Sciences’ (SEES) first annual EarthWeek, March 29-April 2, a celebration of student research in the earth and environmental sciences.

Karl Flessa, director of SEES and head of the UA department of geosciences says, “It’s all about science and communicating science. Randy’s participation demonstrates that science isn’t just important, it’s important and fun.”

During EarthWeek, UA students from the departments of atmospheric sciences, geosciences, hydrology and water resources, and soil, water and environmental science, and from UA’s laboratory of tree-ring research will present their research results.

Dr. Flessa says, “SEES and EarthWeek are about the future of science at the UA: interdisciplinary, integrative, relevant and student-centered.” For more information contact Gabriela Guglielmo in the department of geosciences at or 520-621-2027.

Tickets for the SIZZLE screening are on sale at The Loft Cinema. Price for General Admission $8.00; Students and Loft Members $5.00.

UA co-sponsors of the event are: Biosphere 2, Institute of the Environment, School of
Natural Resources and the Environment, Hanson Film Institute, School of Journalism,
